The Kelpies range from Floris Books comprises over 40 children's novels set in Scotland or with Scottish themes. Kelpies are suitable for children from 8 to 12 years old. We also have a range for younger readers between 6 and 9 years old called Young Kelpies. Our aim is to produce novels with a cracking story, strong characters, believable dialogue and a compelling atmosphere.
Based in Edinburgh, Floris Books is passionate about the strong Scottish content of the Kelpies. By setting all our novels in Scotland, or basing them around Scottish themes, children living in Scotland can read books they find it easy to relate to. The language, location and issues within the Kelpies novels are all familiar and relevant.
The award-winning Kelpies range is Scotland's favourite collection of children's fiction. Floris Books aquired the list in 2001 from Canongate. Since then its classic titles, loved by generations of children, have been re-printed so they can be enjoyed by children today. These classic Kelpies include The Boy with the Bronze Axe, The Desperate Journey, Quest for a Kelpie and Hill of the Red Fox.
The Kelpies range has continued to grow since 2001 with more quality, original children's novels added each year. Recent successes include Chill by Alex Nye and First Aid for Fairies and Other Fabled Beasts by Lari Don, both winners of the Royal Mail Award for Younger Readers, in 2007 and 2009 respectively.
To buy books in the Kelpies range (or any other Floris Books titles) visit the Floris Books website. For more information on Floris Books, visit the Who We Are page on this website. Please note that, because it is intended for children, the Discover Kelpies website is not a 'selling' website -- it's for information and entertainment. We don't offer an e-commerce function.
The Kelpies Prize was re-launched in 2005 to encourage new Scottish writing for children: exciting contemporary fiction for pre-teens that has an identifiably Scottish feel, without cliches. The prize is awarded annually to previously unpublished manuscripts. Winners have included Catscape by Mike Nicholson, Hox by Annemarie Allan and Magnus Fin and the Ocean Quest by Janis Mackay.
Find out more about the Kelpies Prize, including how to enter, by visiting the Kelpies Prize website.
Free Teachers' Guides are available for books in the Kelpies range. They include individual and group activites as well as notes on themes and vocabulary. Teachers' Guides are freely downloadable for use in the classroom.
As the largest publisher of children's books in Scotland, we have long-standing relationships with many teachers, librarians and bookshops. Kelpies authors regularly visit schools, libraries, book festivals and book clubs. If you are interested in holding an author event please email email@example.com for more information. Many of our authors can be booked through the Live Literature Scheme run by Scottish Book Trust.
Would you like to brighten up your library or classroom? Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to request Kelpies posters, which are produced for many of our newer titles. (Posters are provided at our discretion while stocks last.)
